Tips Winter

The Holiday season is here. Before your whole family comes to your house to celebrate the holidays, consider the following tips to make sure you don't have any problems over the Holidays. That way you can spend more time with your family and less time worrying about your plumbing.
• If your septic tank has not been pumped in 3-5 years, consider having it done before your family and friends come for the big holiday party. That way there are no back-ups when everyone is at your house.
• Do not pour grease down your sink, it could stop up your drain causing it to back up into the sink. You need a clean drain to use a dishwasher or to wash dishes in a sink, you can't have a formal holiday dinner with paper plates.
• If you use a garbage disposal, turn it on before you put food into it. Do not put hard to grind foods in the garbage disposal. Also, use cold water for about 20 seconds before and after to help clear the drain to prevent a blockage.
• Conserve hot water by using the dishwasher or wash machine at night. Also, wait about 10 minutes between showers if many people are using the showers.
• Take the hose off of the hose bibs! If you leave the hose on the hose bib it wont allow the water to drain out of the hose bib and then the hose bib might burst, then it will need to be replaced.
• Clean your sump pump and pit. If it is exposed to below freezing temperatures, it might freeze and prevent it from working any further.
• Make sure outside drains and gutters are clear of debris like falling leaves. This may prevent flooding.
• If you leave your home for an extended period, shut your main water valve off. Also, leave the heat on no less than about 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
